With Josh Naylor's 31 homers gone from the lineup, Terry Pluto reveals which players the Cleveland front office is counting on to step up.
‘They’re not going to replace it with one guy’: The Guardians’ challenge in filling Josh Naylor’s offensive voidIs Bo Naylor a player who can give the Guardians more offense in 2025 after Cleveland traded his brother Josh this offseason?traded Josh Naylor to Arizona this offseason, they created a significant void in their lineup – one that won’t be filled by a single player.
, cleveland.com columnist Terry Pluto and host David Campbell discussed how the Guardians plan to replace Naylor’s production through a collective effort from several players expected to take steps forward in 2025. “You’re not only trying to replace Naylor, who, yes, Naylor fell apart towards the end of the season, but it’s still 30 and 100,” Pluto said, referencing Naylor’s 31 home runs and 108 RBIs from last season. “When I talk to Antonetti, talks about internal improvement. And that’s what they are counting on,” Pluto explained. “Not all of them will, but they think some will. “They’re counting on, you know, we’re talking about Lane Thomas and we’re talking about, you know, Carlos Santana. But they’re internally, they’re putting their bets on Bo Naylor or hitting more. They’re putting their bets on Brayan Rocchio picking up where he did in September, Kyle Manzardo and Steven Kwan,” Pluto said. Bo Naylor, the team’s young catcher, presents perhaps the most intriguing source of potential power. Pluto believes he could be this year’s most pleasant offensive surprise. “In AAA his last two years, he hit 28 homers, he had 26 doubles, and he drove in 95 runs,” Pluto said of Bo Naylor’s minor league stats. “In other words, it’s in him to show some power... he could be a guy that has 20 homers, but that would be great to put that in the lineup.” Campbell pointed to Kwan as another player who might provide more power than expected, noting that Kwan is in the last year of his contract and looks stronger this season, and showing he’s capable of more extra-base hits could help him when it comes to his next contract.
