For a decade, Procter attended four or five Chanel shows a year. He got the gig after having photographed Lagerfeld for a magazine profile; Lagerfeld liked the shots and invited him to photograph his shows. His usual spot was front of house, capturing reportage and occasionally sneaking backstage.
“The scale and the ambition of them was one of the reasons I kept doing it – I was very genuinely excited to actually see them,” he recalls. “There was something very joyous about them. When they built the rocket – a life-sized rocket inside the Grand Palais – I just couldn’t stop smiling.” Another favourite was spring/summer 2018, when models walked along a runway under moss-covered, craggy waterfalls.
This element of surprise was part of the mischievousness of the man behind the magic: Lagerfeld himself. His famous sense of humour, Procter says, was always in evidence. “I was once shooting with him in New York, with 10 models,” he says. “I was watching him all day, and whoever was next to him was always giggling away. I’ve seen that many, many times with him: there could be a thousand people there, and whoever’s right next to him, he’s whispering something and they’re cracking up.
