Metro Phoenix schools can collaborate with chefs to create gardens and improve school lunch programs. This is what parents can to do get involved.
Part school lunch recipe development, part education and scholarship program, for Feeding the Future, students are paired up with chefs and work on developing school breakfast, lunch or snacks depending on their age.
Although growing food at the school and teaching the kids about gardens turned out to be easier than she expected, getting them to eat the veggies was a challenge. Through the program, students from kindergarten through eighth grade participate in the garden from planting the seeds to harvesting fruits and vegetables to cooking with them. The kindergarteners might make lemonade, while older kids act as sous chefs for visiting chefs.
By interacting with a diverse group of chefs, students also learn that not everybody eats the same way. As a result, kids develop mature palates and an openness to trying new foods.
