These affordable economy cars and sporty luxury models stand out for their reliability, dependability, and quality.
J.D. Power’s annual Dependability Study is a useful resource for narrowing down a late-model used-car search. It measures how three-year-old vehicles are holding up based on owners’ reports, in this case 33,268 original owners of vehicles from 2023.
The fewer issues a vehicle has, the better it scores, indicating higher quality. That makes the J.D. Power study a helpful guide for shoppers looking for a reliable used car. As they have for years, Toyota vehicles continue to rank highly for reliability in various segments. But other popular cars make the list, too. Below are seven of the most reliable andADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWAn icon of basic transportation, it’s perhaps no surprise that the Toyota Corolla makes the reliability list. There’s little remarkable about the driving experience; the ride is reasonably composed, handling is intuitive, and the brakes are reassuring. The base engine is underpowered, but the Corolla Hybrid improves acceleration and fuel economy. Best known for its sedan body style, the Corolla’s available hatchback version improves cargo-carrying capability. Useful driver assist features are standard. Although the Corolla ranks higher in reliability, we prefer driving the Honda Civic.Engines: 1.8-liter I-4, 2.0-liter I-4, 1.8-liter I-4 and electric motor2023 Honda Civic Even though it’s simple and straightforward, the Honda Civic drives great, too. That’s not to say it’s quick or sporty, but Honda’s tuning provides an enjoyably direct, connected feel from behind the wheel. In hatchback form, the Civic becomes more practical. The cabin is user-friendly, with plenty of real buttons, an intuitive layout, and good ergonomics. Sure, the Civic is still a basic car; it can get loud inside, and the second row has few amenities. Still, it’s much nicer than it needs to be given its entry-level status.Engines: 2.0-liter I-4, 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4Kia's compact sedan stands out with handsome styling inside and out. Tech is another forte for the Forte: It offers a full suite of driver assist features and available big-screen tech. Where the Forte falters is on the road—its sluggish acceleration, coarse CVT automatic, and firm ride dull the experience. The sporty GT version is more fun, but its stiff suspension and clunky dual-clutch transmission aren’t ideal in normal traffic. The Forte’s safety scores may also be a concern for some buyers.Engines: 2.0-liter I-4, 1.6-liter turbocharged I-42023 Toyota Camry A legend of reliability, the 2023 Toyota Camry also stands out for its generous safety tech and strong crash-test results. The hybrid versions are arguably the sweet spot, pairing excellent fuel economy with torquey performance and nicer interior appointments. Still, the Camry isn’t rewarding to drive, and the TRD is the biggest disappointment of the lineup. This is a car built to get the job done, and not much more—at least it’ll stay dependable while doing so.Engines: 2.5-liter inline-four, 3.5-liter V-6, 2.5-liter I-4 and electric motorAlthough the Lexus IS provides a decent mix of luxury and performance, its aging fundamentals are evident. The back seat is cramped, and the infotainment uses a clumsy trackpad-controlled interface. The base engine isn’t very powerful, but the available V-8 option sounds great and has plenty of muscle. Regardless, the IS just doesn’t have a cohesive, modern-feeling driving experience. At least this model from Toyota’s luxury brand looks good and is very reliable—in fact, J.D. Power names it as the most dependable vehicle in this year’s study.Engines: 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, 3.5-liter V-6, 5.0-liter V-82023 BMW 3 Series The 3 Series might not be the benchmark luxury sport sedan it once was, but it’s still pretty great. Regardless of which engine it comes equipped with, the 3 Series is quick, and its mix of tight handling and comfort is enjoyable. Ride quality can be rough in M Sport models, though. Build quality is high, but some of the materials aren’t that impressive, and the large infotainment touchscreen has a tricky user interface. Nevertheless, the 3 Series delivers a distinctly BMW experience and reassuring reliability to go along with it.Engines: 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6, 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and electric motorADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWLook past the garish grille, and the 4 Series delivers a nice mix of luxury and sportiness—that unmistakable BMW feeling. Strong turbocharged engines pair well with the refined handling. The two-door coupe and convertible are posh, while the four-door fastback body style adds practicality. Like the 3 Series with which it’s closely related, the 4 Series has a mostly upscale interior that’s let down by some material choices and a screen-centric user interface. But, also like its counterpart, the 4 Series stands out among luxury cars for reliability.Engines: 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6Stay Ahead of the Curve.
