Dr Anita Mitra – known to her followers as “Gynae Geek” – breaks down the symptoms to be aware of.

If you notice something that doesn’t seem right, “call your GP to discuss it further and they will arrange a referral to the gynaecology clinic. Usually, this will be called a ‘two-week wait’ clinic for suspected gynaecological cancer.” The thought of being tested for any type of cancer is daunting, a fact that Dr Mitra fully acknowledges.

“This sounds very scary, and whilst having the above symptoms doesn’t automatically mean you have cancer, it’s important to find out quickly. I find a lot of women delay seeking help initially because they’re not sure what’s wrong, but that’s why we are here. I acknowledge it can be overwhelming to go and speak to a doctor about these things, which is why I often recommend making a list of the things that you want to remember, so that you don’t forget whilst you’re in the appointment.
