The mass release stems from a bill passed by the state legislature in 2021, which amended a law passed as part of prison reform efforts in 2015. Gov. Kay Ivey included the bill in her call for the special session focusing on prisons.
The Alabama Department of Corrections will be releasing 369 state prison inmates on Tuesday.
“This complaint seeks to prevent the early release of inmates currently in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections to the supervision of the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles until such time as provides the statutorily-required notice to the inmates’ victims,” the complaint in the lawsuit states.
