These 18 Glasgow photos show a vastly different Gorbals in 1983.
When the Gorbals' dilapidated Victorian tenements were brought down en masse in the 1960s, it was hoped that the new flats and tower blocks that sprang up to replace them would spark a change in fortunes for an area considered one of Scotland's most notorious slums.
But, as these recently unearthed archive pictures illustrate, the grand social engineering experiment that was inflicted on the Gorbals would sour in less than 20 years. Taken by renowned Scots photographer Tom Kidd for the Daily Mirror on a particularly bleak January day in 1983, the photos show that many of the new concrete clad developments that now dominated the district were already past their best. The wintery snaps capture the faces of families living in the shadow of the huge multi-storeys at Hutchesonton Areas C, D and E, where cracks were, quite literally, beginning to show.
The seven-storey blocks at Hutchie E and Sir Basil Spence's award-winning 20-storey Queen Elizabeth slab blocks at Hutchie C, would both be demolished by 1993, while only two of the four tower blocks at Hutchesontown D are still standing. A new Gorbals has risen over the past 20 years, with the notorious planning blunders that blighted the latter part of the 20th century all but eradicated.Throwback Glasgow photos show the day Kate Bush greeted local fans in 1980 Resurfaced Glasgow documentary recalls 1960s street gangs that terrorised city
