A professional rower tragically perished earlier this month after swallowing a bee while biking along the coast in Brazil.
Waldonilton de Andrade Reis, 43, had reportedly been leading a cycling tour of Ponta Negra beach, in Manaus, Amazonas on March 2, reported BrazilianThings took an unexpected turn, however, after bee flew down the athlete’s throat midway through the ride, according to his family who spoke to local media about the tragedy.
The athlete reportedly went into anaphylactic shock — a life-threatening allergic reaction — shortly thereafter. Due to the lack of medical facilities in the area, Reis was allegedly forced to wait 20 minutes before help arrived, during which time his condition worsened substantially, said sister Rosilene Reis.
Waldonilton de Andrade Reis swallowed a bee while cycling on a beach in Manaus, Brazil and went into anaphylactic shock. The family has stated that the slow emergency response time was partially to blame for the athlete’s death.“There was no help, no health center, no hospital close by,” she lamented. “The most that was available was a fire Department base that didn’t have a doctor on duty.”A fireman eventually arrived and attempted to resuscitate the cyclist, but to no avail.
Despite the medics’ best efforts, the patient passed away last Thursday. Rosilene blamed the slow response time, claiming that her brother’s brain had been deprived of oxygen for more than three minutes — the longest it can last without sustaining severe damage, according to doctors — while he awaited medical assistance.
“If there had been adequate care, a doctor, a fireman, or a health center, someone could have resuscitated my brother,” the devastated sibling concluded. In light of the tragedy, his family is calling on officials to implement better emergency provisions in the region where he was stung.in 2018, a Spanish woman suffered a fatal allergic reaction after undergoing “bee acupuncture” — a controversial pain remedy that involves receiving a live bee sting.
