“It all stemmed from how much we love actresses, and particularly that performance of being humble and kind and grounded, which no actor can be—ourselves included,” says kateberlant.

A particular highlight comes in a cringe-inducing sketch where Berlant aggressively hits on Early while they wipe their makeup off backstage at a comedy club. It’s as bleak as it sounds. But as their sketches are wont to do, it asks deeper—and often unspoken—questions about where the boundaries of intimacy lie. “I mean, it really just comes from the fact that we have absolutely no sexual tension whatsoever,” Berlant says, laughing again.
There’s a world in which Early and Berlant really could be the kind of superstars they, however facetiously, pretend to be inBut is that something they’d even want? “It does come from a very earnest place of wanting to imagine a world where it’s actually possible for us to entertain the masses,” says Early. “I think Kate and I have always been labeled asin some way, whereas we’ve always seen ourselves leading the U.S.O. tours and performing for the troops.
