How does his wife, Andrea , put up with him? Heller makes a point of honing in on Rhys’s dark features and resting scowl. She knows as well as anyone that he’s got a face that begs of anguish, and she anchors the entire film in the slow dissipation of that misery: from tight skepticism to unadorned vulnerability.particularly Heller’s pointed close-ups, make us see Rogers through Lloyd’s, eyes and vice versa.
In the end, though, Rogers remains somewhat of a mystery to us, which feels appropriate. As the credits roll, you realize he’s left that question ofinstead concludes with Rogers in shadow, at a piano, questions unanswered—a nod to all that we still don’t know, and to the man whose sympathy made us want to learn.
