Jessica Rodriguez, the president and COO of Univision, on the challenges of being both American and Hispanic in 2019

When a white 21-year-old Texas man opened fire in an El Paso Wal-Mart earlier this month, murdering 22 people and jolting a nation seemingly numb to mass shootings, his goal was, in part, to terrorize American Hispanics. In a racist online manifesto posted shortly before he opened fire, he cited the “Hispanic invasion of Texas” as the motivation for the massacre. He hoped that his act of terror would make Hispanics cower in fear.

“As a Latino, you straddle a little bit this idea of like, ‘Well, what am I, right?’ Am I American? I don’t feel I’m as American as I should be to my American friends,” Rodriguez said. “But then from my Latino friends, I’m not as Latino as they expect.” “I’m looking at the Nielsen ratings and I’m seeing what are the top shows in America and again, I’m seeing all these shows that I just mentioned to you, and there is not one Spanish-language show,” said Rodriguez. “I’m like, ‘Well, every Latino in this country knows you grow up watching “,” or … one of the great telenovelas.’ … And it was just like a very frustrating thing to not see that my community and myself was being represented in media.
