SINGAPORE: Supertanker Ceres I has entered the area of Malaysia's Bertam floating oil terminal on Monday (July 22) morning after it was intercepted by local authorities on Sunday, shipping data from LSEG and Kpler showed.

A 2019 study conducted in Selangor involving 426 adult respondents from various backgrounds, showed that the majority disposed of expired or unused medicines along with their household waste. Many patients have the habit of collecting medicines at healthcare facilities despite having adequate supplies at home.

This is because many pharmaceutical wastes can interfere with the functioning of the body systems, such as the endocrine and nervous systems, and may increase the risk of cancer. For instance, studies conducted in the 2000s revealed that the pollution of rivers and lakes with waste from contraceptive medicines caused adult fish in the contaminated habitats to change sex from male to female.

From these collection centres, the medicines will be transported to disposal centres where they will be burned at very high temperatures in incinerators. In fact, the government is working on introducing the MyMediSAFE programme, an initiative focused on the safe disposal of medicines.
