Not much was known about Bell Pottinger until the name rocketed to familiarity for South Africans in 2017, after reports that the infamous London-based PR firm had helped craft a disinformation campaign to stir up racial tension during the state capture era of former president Jacob Zuma.
Although the term gained widespread traction because it points to a real problem we have in South Africa, the reason it was brandished was far more nefarious. And that reason was to gain political favour for the Guptas – namely brothers Ajay, Tony and Atul – as they continued plundering South African state resources for their own gain, justifying it by stating that it was money flowing away from white monopoly power and into black hands.
“Audiences were taken aback by the frank depiction of influence-peddling that goes on behind the scenes during election campaigns around the world,” said Poplak.
