Al Jama-Ah’s leader Ganief Hendricks has been resisting calls for Gwamanda to step down, even arguing that it would be better if it happened towards the end of the year instead.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress in Johannesburg says there will be no Christmas wait when it comes to getting Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda out of office.
It said Al Jama-Ah and the ANC had agreed in principle that when the time was right, Gwamanda would step down, paving the way for an ANC candidate to take over the reins. Al Jama-Ah’s leader, Ganief Hendricks, has been resisting calls for Gwamanda to step down, even arguing that it would be better if it happened towards the end of the year instead. The ANC in Johannesburg said it was surprised by suggestions that the move to reconfigure government in the city should be put on ice, at least until the festive season.
Its spokesperson Sasabona Manganye: "You would have heard even the president of the ANC indicating that Johannesburg is a priority in terms of strengthening and stabilising municipalities."ActionSA is demanding the position of Speaker in order to support the ANC’s bid, but Manganye said there were no plans to change the current Speaker as yet.
"We can’t be talking about the election of a new Speaker when there is no such a decision, we are still engaging with ActionSA."
