Our female-led series Screen Sisters is back and we spoke to the lovely Ruth Madeley about life in the industry as a wheelchair user and her new show, ThenBarbaraMetAlan
Ruth’s close working relationship with Jack has continued ever since, appearing in other projects includingwhich recounts the true story of two punk disability activists who in the '90s helped create the Disabled People’s Direct Action Network
Ruth plays Barbara Lisicki in the film, which takes on some dramatic licence as it centres on her relationship with Alan Holdsworth, and how their different ideas of protest and activism ultimately caused a rift in their relationship. In one particularly awkward scene, Barbara is invited onto a chat show only for the stage to be completely inaccessible to her and her wheelchair. It results in a series of crewmembers having to hoist her over wire blocks, up onto the stage, and wheel her around falling pieces of set so she could finally be in a position to talk.
"Even in those moments, I know the intent is because they want to show disability. But just wanting to isn't enough. You have to do it properly for it to be helpful."
