Mulder and Scully are about to be back with the arrival of the R-rated cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The second theatrical installment in the beloved sci-fi franchise picked up seven years after the events of the original X-Files series finale, with Gillian Anderson's Scully working as a staff physician at a Catholic hospital, while David Duchovny's Mulder remains a fugitive from the FBI.
However, when an FBI agent is kidnapped while investigating a string of missing women, and a former Catholic priest convicted of pedophilia claims to have visions of her whereabouts, the pair reluctantly make peace with the FBI to try and save her. Co-written and directed by series creator Chris Carter, The X-Files: I Want to Believe was only a modest success upon its 2008 release, grossing over $68 million against its $30 million production budget, and garnering mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.
While the trio would return a decade later for a proper season 10 of the series, Duchovny and Carter also revealed plans for a proper director's cut of the sequel movie with plans for a June 2026 streaming premiere. Now, after a delay due to reported technical issues, Gizmodo reports that The X-Files: I Want to Believe director's cut has officially set a new streaming release date.
The movie, which has now updated its title to The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn, is set to debut on Hulu and Disney+ on August 14, and is said to faithfully restore the filmmaker's original vision for the title, which is also said to be an R-rated venture. The initial decision to allow Carter to develop a director's cut of his 2008 sequel certainly makes some sense.
Disney, Fox and Hulu are currently in development on their highly-anticipated X-Files reboot from Ryan Coogler, which is being led by Danielle Deadwyler and Hamish Patel. Production on the pilot of the new version ran from June to July 2026, with the streamer yet to give the greenlight for a full series order.
Beyond the impending return of the franchise as a whole, it also isn't the first time that The X-Files: I Want to Believe has found itself getting an alternate cut release. The 2008 sequel's original home media release came with an extended cut option, which was four minutes longer and featured more violence that was cut in order to avoid an R-rating during its theatrical run.
With details currently sparse on how much extra footage the new X-Files: I Want to Believe R-rated cut is coming with, it's unclear how much longer the new version will be, and what it will actually entail beyond aiming to be scarier than its theatrical version. However, given many director's cuts find themselves getting far better reviews than their original releases, it will be interesting to see if Carter's full vision lets the 2008 sequel get a critical reappraisal and become a streaming sensation
