For the first time in its 25-year history, the World Trade Organization is now poised to have a woman at its head.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria is an economist and international development expert. Throughout her career, she spent 25 years at the World Bank, becoming its number two in 2007, and she has also served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister between 2003-2006 and 2011-2015. She was also Nigeria's foreign minister in 2006. She was the first woman to occupy both roles. If she gets elected at the WTO, she will not only be the first woman head, but also the first African to do so.

164 member states' representatives, as part of the application process to head the World Trade Organization as Director General in Geneva on July 16, 2020. - The eight candidates battling to become the next head of the beleaguered World Trade Organization make their pitches this week, with three days of auditions which started on July 15, 2020.

Ms. Okonjo-Iweala, for her part, said “Trade tensions among the membership have flared up, threatening the fundamental architecture of the MTS. With all these, the WTO, unfortunately, is now perceived by some as an inefficient organization that has failed to keep abreast of developments in the global economy.“
