Genre-bending superstar Doja Cat is no stranger to controversy. She’s continually pushed the envelope, refusing to dilute her artistic vision for the sake of palatability. However, it was during the 2023 rollout of Scarlet, her fourth studio album, that many found there to be no coming back for the artist.

They attested its “demonic themes,” her brash pivot in stylistic expression, and departure from pop hits. She found herself amid several disputes with fans via social media, who wanted the songstress to return to her hyper-feminine “Say So” roots. Finding her energy during the era to be “aggressive” and “off-putting,” audiences quickly labeled her done for. However, with Doja Cat’s newest body of work Vie debuting at number one and garnering nothing but critical praise, it’s safe to say her cancellation may have been revoked. Doja Cat’s 'Vie' Vie is the 29-year-old’s fifth studio album, journeying through vibrant pop hits like “Jealous Type” and “Gorgeous” with dizzying rap verses drenched in ‘'80s-esque landscapes. Fans have not only found the era to be precisely designed and high-caliber, but they’ve rejoiced her subtle return to a more pop-leaning sound. Not only has this era marked a major comeback, in fact, but it’s already broken some records. With the release of Vie, Doja Cat has officially become the first female rapper in history to write more than one completely solo album. She is also the first mainstream Black woman this century to release two solo-written albums, and has surpassed Cardi B’s AM I THE DRAMA? to be the fastest female album to reach number one this year. Not only has it been an incredibly successful debut, but Doja Cat has set herself up to surpass the monumental achievements of her career thus far. It’s important to note that while Scarlet was the source of much social pushback, it commercially did astounding. Peaking within the top five of the Billboard 200, its lead single"Paint the Town Red" remains her most successful song to date, marking her first solo number-one on the Hot 100, her first number-one on the Billboard Global 200, and topping charts internationally. While many found the sonic pivot to be harsh and indigestible, the LA-based artist saw the vision through, encapsulating an experimental era that was nothing like what her peers were releasing and nothing like she had ever done before. In full surrender to transformation, Vie marks a new shift. Continuing to be bold and innovative, there’s no doubt that with the public now back on her side, Doja Cat will only continue to outdo herself.
