Around 7,000 runners and walkers will participate Saturday in the Carlsbad 5000, with the men’s masters race at 6:55 a.m. and the women’s elite race at 1:23 p.m.
Raised in Kenai, Alaska, population 7,590, Allie Ostrander is a product of her environment. Trails were not far from her home, so, save for winter when the temperature dipped to minus-20 degrees, Ostrander passed hours outdoors.
Where Ostrander will be going come Sunday afternoon is running up and down Carlsbad Boulevard, with waves crashing in the backdrop as the 26-year-old professional runner chases a paycheck in the 37Some 7,000 runners and walkers will be participating in the event dubbed “The World’s Fastest 5K.” It begins with the men’s masters race at 6:55 a.m. and concludes with the women’s elite race starting at 1:23 p.m.
The 2024 Olympic Trials are barely a year off but Ostrander is uncertain what event she’ll focus on in her bid to qualify for the Paris Games.“It’s a super challenging distance,” she said. “It’s long enough that a lot can happen during a race.”
