In the last week of October this year, I attended as guest the founding congress of the International Labor Confederation (ILC) in Istanbul, Turkiÿe to deliver a solidarity message from the Asean Trade Union Council.
THIS is the motto coined by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkiÿe or Turkey, which has become his now famous battle cry to reform the United Nations Security Council.The word 'five' refers to the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council with veto power on resolutions and in the choice of the UN secretary-general. The five permanent members are the United States, Russia, China, Great Britain and France.
The vesting of the powerful veto power in the five countries that emerged victorious in the Second World War was viewed from the very inception of the UN as vital to its 'avowed principle of unanimity and the desire of the five permanent members of the Security Council to act together, and to protect their sovereign rights and their national interests.
