We chat with TheWonderYears stars Alley Mills and Dan Lauria about their onscreen reunion in tonight's all-new episode of FOXTV's FantasyIsland
A reboot of the 1977 drama series, Fantasy Island is set at a luxury resort where couples can live out their wildest dreams. However, nothing is ever as straightforward as it seems, and the magical location seeks to teach rather than simply pamper. Roselyn Sánchez stars as the island's caretaker, Elena Roarke, who assists the guests during their transformations in an effort to preserve Mr. Roarke's original legacy.
Alley Mills & Dan Lauria Talk Fantasy Island Screen Rant: In the theme of Fantasy Island, what would a fantasy vacation look like for each of you?Alley Mills: You live in New York, Dan! Dan Lauria: No, that was the first time. Oh, actually, it was the first time in that part of Puerto Rico. Twice I worked there, but I was at the other end of the island where there was nothing there—that old air base that used to be a soundstage. But that was years ago. The trip with Fantasy Island—the hotel was great, the people were great, you know?
Alley Mills: It was a great experience. And the cast was phenomenal. You know, just really good New York actors. You play a married couple in Fantasy Island just like you did in The Wonder Years. Did you notice any similarities between this relationship and Norma and Jack's? Alley Mills: That's very rare. Young people don't tend to rehearse. It's a very different work ethic than when we grew up. Back in the day, even when I was doing television back in the 70s, there was a lot of rehearsal. It was really interesting to rehearse with great people of theater, like Jim Brooks. It was great. You discovered so much in rehearsal. I was doing a show with Martin Short back in the 70s. But now, there's no rehearsal. You just shoot. You just go.
There’s also the lovely Roselyn Sánchez who leads the show and oversees Fantasy Island. How was working with her? Alley Mills: I think there are three film crews shooting at all times there. Which is great, because it's not that big an island. So that's pretty amazing that there's constant product of three film crews working all the time down there. We met an amazing woman. Our entire crew said, "She's the reason we're here. She's our mentor." She was older than me and I'm 72. So she was, like, 75 or something.
