With many understandably disappointed by the departure, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has addressed the fan backlash to Henry Cavill's exit. The actor's leaving of the hit Netflix fantasy franchise has been the talk of the town for the past month, which the announcement coming on the heels of his return to the DC Universe as Superman in Black Adam, with plans for him to continue in a major capacity.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While speaking with TechRadar to discuss the upcoming prequel show, The Witcher: Blood Origin, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich opened up about Henry Cavill's exit from the franchise. Though preferring to keep the focus on the upcoming show, she did acknowledge his leaving to be a "big deal" for the team and asked for the fan backlash to come to an end.
It's a big deal for us, too... And that's the thing – there's a lot of talk and rumors about, and we fully understand why fans are going there. What I will say is please come back for The Witcher season three so that we can continue to do this. Obviously, that [Cavill's departure] is huge news. But what I don't want to do is – this has to stay about Blood Origin, Declan [de Barra, Blood Origin's showrunner], the cast, and the crew. This is their time in the spotlight.
Cavill's passion for The Witcher even extended into his development of Geralt of Rivia for the Netflix show, finding a unique accent for his character to help establish his Rivian roots, rather than use his natural British accent. The actor also frequently pushed for the show to stay true to Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, which reportedly led to creative tension between Cavill and the writer's room.
How Fan Backlash Could Kill The Witcher While the unofficial reasoning given for Cavill's Witcher exit has been his busy schedule, the fan backlash to his departure when paired with the poor reviews from audiences to season 2 does make for a major hurdle for the show to overcome. Should The Witcher season 3 score strong reviews and offer an effective explanation for Hemsworth's recasting, it may just be able to outlive its backlash and get future seasons.
