Everything to know about the still-unsolved mystery of TheWatcher—and what’s happened to the house since the letters’ arrival.
had been floated as a potential suspect, after he reportedly told students at the nearby Summit High School, where he taught English, about his interest in a local property. “He had this idea to start writing letters to the house—not the occupants but to the house,” a former student told Wiedeman. Per Wiedeman, Kaplow retired the very month that letters began arriving to 657 Boulevard, and Kaplow’s brother, was the lawyer who represented the Woods family in the Broaddus’ suit against them.
According to Wiedeman, countless other investigative measures were taken: Postal Service employees had been interviewed; cameras were installed at the local post office and at the local library where letters could have been typed. Derek even reportedly considered hiring someone to hack into the neighborhood’s Wi-Fi networks, an idea that proved too costly and, also, apparently illegal. Nothing substantial was ever found.
Derek would do himself no favors by sending cryptic letters of his own to some of the family’s most public local critics, on Christmas Eve 2017, as he admitted to Wiedeman the following year. Signed “Friends of the Broaddus Family,” the note “included several stories about recent acts of domestic terrorism in which signs of brewing mental illness had gone unnoticed,” per. “It’s like cancer,” Derek told Wiedeman of the case, claiming that these were the only anonymous letters he had written.
