The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon star is planning a hiatus from acting once season 4 of the show concludes. The Walking Dead spinoff show, focused on fan favorite Daryl Dixon, debuted on AMC on September 10, 2023.
The show has so far run three seasons and 19 episodes, with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 airing its finale on October 19, 2025. Three months earlier, in July 2025, the show was renewed for a fourth and final season. The show follows volatile tracker and survivalist, Daryl Dixon, who was a core part of the original The Walking Dead series, as he travels across Europe to find his way home, developing important connections along the way.
The show's second season saw Daryl joined by long-time friend Carol Peletier, another Walking Dead fan favorite, played by Melissa McBride. Per People, McBride, who has played the role of Carol for more than 15 years, revealed that she plans to take a break from acting for "personal time.
" Having starred in all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead, and now starring in Daryl Dixon, McBride was clear that she wants to take time to focus on herself. Check out her quotes below: “I’m gonna be working on me a little bit. I’m gonna be doing a little personal time. And then we’ll just see what happens.
” It is unclear whether AMC's announcement that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will end after season 4 triggered McBride's decision, or whether the actor planned this in advance. Either way, the end of the show, and the bookend of such an iconic character journey, feels like a fitting time for McBride to step back and take a break from performing for a while.
McBride has pretty much worked consistently since The Walking Dead premiered, so it makes sense that she would want to take some time for herself. Based on her comments, it feels like this will be a much-needed personal break to recharge batteries and figure out what she wants to do next, and which career direction is the most appealing.

Based on her comments, it seems unlikely that McBride would take a role like Carol again, and it's also unlikely she would want to commit to another 10+ years on a show. However, the success of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, the overall franchise, and her prominent role in it, will no doubt have opened more doors for her as an actor, and could help shape her future career direction.
