, the current eighth generation is reportedly planned to be the last version of the Golf as we know it today.the ninth gas-powered Golf is simply a victim of timing. Since the eighth Golf is relatively new and still scheduled for a 2024 mid-cycle refresh just before the brand rolls out what it currently expects to be its final new gas-powered cars, no next-generation Golf is currently slated for development.
That plan is dependent on market conditions going forward, and brand CEO Thomas Schäfer has not ruled out the possibility that a major shift could force VW's hand in developing another gasoline-powered variant of its popular compact. The brand's gargantuan investments in EV development suggest they do not see that sort of future on the horizon, though.
