The endgame of Path of Exile 2 is an entirely different animal. You die on a map once, you’re done. That’s it.
Despite the campaign being unfinished, you can play through three existing Acts on two different difficulties. It’s been a fun alternative to Diablo, a slower, more methodical type of ARPG with more in-depth build options and challenging bosses.
. But I’ve now hit a point where I’m just…done, at least until the Early Access feedback from players is able to significantly alter the endgame. My experience when I reached the endgame was one of confusion. I felt good about my build in the campaign, and I was able to clear the early tiers of the endgame. The entire explorable map idea looks very cool. But as can happen in a game with pretty punishing enemy damage, I would occasionally get one-shot by an elite or boss or ground effect. Death in Path of Exile 2’s campaign was not terribly controversial. Out in the world, you have to do a lot of backtracking and fight through respawned enemies, which wasn’t the most convenient, but fine. Bosses, which required a lot of trial and error, would at least spawn you right back next to them so you could keep fighting and learning. The endgame of Path of Exile 2 is an entirely different animal. You die on a map once, you’re done. That’s it. Not only does it kick you out, but you lose the Waystone you used to get there. My base questions here were…is it supposed to be like this? Do I just need to change my build around to avoid these one-shot deaths?Possibly ‘A Thousand’ Dead In French Territory Mayotte From Powerful Cyclone Chido I was recommended a video by Kripparrian, whose content I religiously consumed in Diablo. What I found there was the recognition that I was not alone here, but that things only get worse from here, and even some of the highest level players do not believe the endgame is in good shape at all right now, here in Early Access. Kripp confirms that being one-shot by enemies essentially never changes. You have to devote essentially all spare slots in your gear to defense, armor, life, resistance, and even then…you can still be one-shot many times. This means you could grind for dozens of hours and the experience may barely change. Rather, the entire game is based around timing dodge rolls to avoid enemy attacks. But even then, the game just doesn’t play fair, it’s littered with attacks that are broadcast unclearly, where you can often die without even knowing how. Another issue is floor effects, things like tiny orbs you can barely see that can one-shot you. Then you move to penalties, which only get worse in time. Kripp explains that in higher levels, you not only lose a map when you die, you lose XP, and in some cases, lose the path you took to even get to a higher level map. I saw the analogy that it’s like dying once to Malenia in Elden Ring, and you lose all your runes and all the Sites of Grace in her entire region.I really enjoyed aspects of the campaign that were difficult, which mainly happened early on before you could really gear up all that well and had to be very quick and strategic as you learned boss fights . This endgame? I’ve not had any fun with it, and Kripp has reassured me that in its current state, no matter how I build or how perfect I try to play, it’s always going to be like that. Sure, if GGG ends up overhauling the endgame based on feedback, I’d love to return, but in its current state it’s kind of a nightmare. If your response is simply “git gud” here, I am convinced you may just still be in Cruel difficulty and have not really experienced this endgame in any meaningful capacity. I’m not speaking to the 0.01% of top grinders, but even some of them have these issues, as Kripp demonstrates here. It’s Early Access, so things can change.
