'Nirvana played one of its most famous shows 30 years ago at the Cow Palace. I was there.'
Three decades later, it’s been nice to take a minute and ponder what the concert meant to me at the time, what it means to me now, and how those two perspectives somehow always end up being different.
In 1993, the concert didn’t feel like it was a seminal moment in rock history. I definitely didn’t know Nirvana then would become what Nirvana is today. And if you’d have told me I’d be writing about it 30 years later for the publication I grew up reading — when my own high school journalism teacher didn’t even let me do a recap for the school paper — I would’ve probably said that’s pretty awesome, and at same time it would’ve given me pause to consider my forthcoming career choices.
Nirvana was loud and intense and attentive to its young audience. They tore through their set with the urgency of a band that seemed to know a lot of us were pushing up against a midnight curfew.
