It’s a relatively big squad for this time of year and the absence of Melbourne Rebels lock Josh Canham, therefore, is something of a surprise.
New Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has given himself a bit of wriggle room in his squad for the July Tests.
The 23-year-old was excellent in the quarterfinal loss against the Hurricanes, and still has plenty of upside. In fact, of the uncapped players in Super Rugby Pacific this year, Canham, Cale and Kailea stood out as the forward trio that looked to have the right stuff for Tests.Charlie Cale charges ahead.Angus Blyth and Ryan Smith are grafters, Jeremy Williams and Nick Frost have that ability to play a bit wider and are No. 6 options, while Lukhan Salakaia-Loto can do a bit of both.
Statistics don’t tell the full story, of course, but they do paint part of the picture: Smith’s strengths are those more closely aligned to the requirements of Test rugby.
