One year after its release, Lady Gaga’s album Chromatica is finally having its cultural moment
In early 2020, Lady Gaga had one creative vision in mind: a packed dance floor., Gaga’s sixth studio album, released in May of 2020, instead met a pandemic’s empty clubs. Although the electro pop album fared well on the charts, debuting at No. 1, its intended effect was to bring Gaga’s music back to the club after her Oscar-winning turn inThings didn’t exactly pan out that way, as clubs weren’t open.
“A lot of us felt like it didn’t get its time to shine,” Brooklyn DJ and party organizer Ty Sunderland says of the album. “This album was made for the clubs.” One year after its release, Sunderland and other DJs are now playing the album in heavy rotation. Pop music moves at light speed, but with vaccinations increasing and indoor venues reopening, the album is part of a wave of last year’s music—from artists like
