The president said the White House bestowed the dog with a medal and plaque during a surprise Rose Garden appearance.

President Donald Trump on Monday surprised the press corps by trotting out the military dog injured in last month’s raid that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The dog rocketed to fame when Trump gave it a shout-out in his address to the nation announcing the Baghdadi raid last month. “We have declassified a picture of the wonderful dog that did such a GREAT JOB in capturing and killing the Leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi!” he wrote. Shortly after, he reposted a photoshopped picture of himself placing a medal around Conan's neck that quickly became one of his most retweeted posts ever.

Conan’s surprise appearance came one day before Trump is set to participate in the annual pardoning of Thanksgiving turkeys. The president and first lady Melania Trump flanked the dog on either side as he spoke to the press, while Vice President Mike Pence hung back and pet Conan sporadically as the dog sat still by the legs of his handler.
