In March, when the U.K. announced a program allowing Brits to sponsor refugees in their homes, more than 100,000 residents registered their interest. Shortly afterward, the first Ukrainians began to arrive, settling into a new life.

from 2017, a series of magical doorways leading to other countries suddenly appear. “Rumors had begun to circulate of doors that could take you elsewhere,” Hamid writes. You step through a darkened portal in one location and emerge somewhere else. For some Ukrainians, the effect of the U.K.’s visa scheme has not been entirely dissimilar. In March, when the government announced the program, more than a hundred thousand members of the British public registered their interest.

In 2019, the couple began talking about hosting a Syrian refugee, and contacted the nonprofit Refugees at Home. The opera expert had departed, and the top floor was free. But, in August of that year, David was admitted to the hospital, and he died five weeks later. Kaye didn’t think she could do it alone, though she felt like she was “rattling around in an empty house.” She took long walks in the park with her elderly rescue dog, Sadie.

Since March, some eighty-six thousand Ukrainians have resettled in the U.K. under either the Homes for Ukraine scheme or a related program for Ukrainians with family already living in the country. When considered next to the total number of Ukrainian refugees across Europe—5.5 million, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency—it’s a drop in the bucket. Other countries, in the European Union, are doing much more. Germany has welcomed more than eight hundred thousand; Poland, nearly 1.2 million.

When Yana arrived in London—her first flight, which she spent peering out the window the whole time—she thought the city looked like an illustrated book. Ward’s colleague in Poland turned out to be a business recruiter, and she was offered an entry-level job at Ward’s company. “A lot of work with spreadsheets,” she told me. In Hackney, she worked at the kitchen table during the day, and spent nights taking an online English class or watching Netflix.

Before matching with a Ukrainian, potential sponsors must pass a background check and an inspection of their property. But many people told me these investigations felt cursory or rushed. “Some of these checks have got some big holes,” Mann said. Local authorities would not be able to tell, for instance, if a sponsor had previously “been flagged as having child-protection issues,” or had a history of financial abuse.

Russians Press Assault on Eastern Ukrainian CityRussians Press Assault on Eastern Ukrainian CityRussian forces are pounding the city of Lysychansk and its surroundings in an all-out attempt to seize the last stronghold of resistance in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province. The regional governor said Saturday that Russians “opened fire from all available kinds of weapons” in the last day. Ukrainian fighters have spent weeks trying to defend the city and to keep it from falling to Russia, as neighboring Sievierodonetsk did a week ago. Luhansk and neighboring Donetsk are the two provinces that make up the Donbas region, where Russia has focused its offensive since the spring. Pro-Russia separatists have held portions of both provinces since 2014, and Moscow recognizes all of Luhansk and Donetsk as sovereign republics.
