With positive tests on the rise across the country but Covid deaths dropping, the picture across our region is mixed and shows two districts with huge rises in the week ending December 3
With Christmas less than a fortnight away, common colds and illnesses are on the rise across Lancashire as temperatures plummet and winter starts to bite.
The latest figures for the Lancashire area show an increase of 20.3 per cent in case numbers - higher than some nearby areas. Blackburn with Darwen, in comparison, saw a drop of 1.8 per cent in case numbers, while Bury dropped by 16.7 per cent, Rochdale stayed the same for case numbers, and Fylde's cases dropped by 12.2 per cent. However, Hyndburn rose by 57.9 per cent, Burnley rose by 64.7 per cent and Ribble Valley by 29.
However, it’s worth remembering that there are many places with fewer than three cases for which no data was shown, like Adlington & Rivington and swathes of West Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cumbria. And the latest data for England shows an increase of 12.2% of positive tests nationally in between November 27 and December 3.
Covid-19 booster jabs have been given to two-thirds of over 50s in England up to December 4, but last week health chiefs warned that hundreds of thousands of people at risk and more likely to become seriously ill have yet to come forward. NHS England said last week that 67% of those with a weakened immune system had been vaccinated but some might not be aware of a condition that makes them eligible for a top-up.
