Lymon says she got involved in SDS because she was impressed with the group’s visible presence on campus. “They weren’t afraid to have their voices heard on campus. I feel like sometimes that passion isn’t held in all organizations because of their bureaucracy,” she explains. “SDS wasn’t afraid to test the waters and break boundaries.”
“Since then, a lot of my time has been dedicated to redistributing [mutual aid] funds in Minneapolis, getting gear for protesters," she says, "specifically Black youth on the front lines, and raising money for those bonds.” Organizers gave a range of responses when asked about the spark that ignited the uprisings. Aly, the DC-based student activist, points to the lack of emotion expressed by former police officer Derek Chauvin as he knelt on Floyd’s neck, extinguishing his life.
