A tragic incident
James Woolley Massey, who lived at the property with his wife Mary, fell from a bedroom window on the top floor. Having got up in the night to investigate a strange noise, the well-known Nottingham publican is believed to have lost his bearings and took a tumble 20ft below, landing half on the pavement and half in the gutter Mansfield Road.
Mrs Massey was awoken by the police officer, who found a window wide open above the spot where her husband's half-dressed body was discovered.
