Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Each member of the group known as the Marauders met a tragic end, and the cautionary tales of their lives reflected the themes of the Harry Potter series.

James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were mischievous and clever during their days at Hogwarts School, and together, they seemed nearly invincible. Of course, the moment they all entered adulthood, Voldemort's First Wizarding War was in full swing, and each of the Marauders was put to the test. Though some sooner than others, this fight against the Dark Lord would eventually claim all of their lives—and per the central theme of Harry Potter, this came down to their choices. Harry learned throughout his own years fighting Voldemort that, despite the presence of the Chosen One prophecy, it was his choices that determined the role he would play in the war. This wasn't an easy lesson to learn. It wasn't until near the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that Harry fully understood that his decision to sacrifice himself to Voldemort is what truly dictated his fate. The Boy Who Lived had learned this, in part, from observing the decisions of those from the generation before him, including the Marauders. RELATED: The History Of The Marauder's Map Explained - Why It Was Created, By Who & More Questions Answered James Potter’s Story Taught Harry That Even Heroes Have A Dark Side For years in Harry Potter, Harry thought of his father as a brave and admirable hero. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, he began to recall a vague memory of the night his father had died, and James had ordered Lily to take Harry and run. He attempted to face Voldemort himself to save his family and was killed as a result. This knowledge meant that when Severus Snape painted James as a sort of villain in Harry Potter, Harry was sure that the man couldn't be right. James Potter had been a hero—end of story. Of course, a significant lesson of the Harry Potter series is that even heroes aren't perfect. This is seen in characters like Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape—and, of course, James Potter. Harry's father had indeed been a hero, but it was also true that he had a dark streak that negatively affected the lives of many. It was partly because of James' bad behavior that Snape became a Death Eater, which, by extension, means it was James' own fault that Voldemort found out about the Chosen One Prophecy and attacked the Potters to begin with. Sirius Black’s Story Proved That Bias Is Hard To Overcome Though the Harry Potter movies skipped over the details, Sirius Black's death was a direct result of the unconscious bias he had learned from his family. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the house-elf Kreacher managed to leave Grimmauld Place and tell Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange all about Harry's close connection with his master. Because of this, Voldemort knew to use Sirius as bait to lure Harry to the Department of Mysteries. Additionally, when Harry checked at Grimmauld Place to confirm that his vision of Voldemort torturing Sirius was true, it was Kreacher who told him that his godfather had left . As Dumbledore told Harry at the end of Order of the Phoenix, if Sirius had treated Kreacher more kindly, he might not have died. The last surviving member of the Black family had never "saw Kreacher as a being with feelings as acute as a human's," and therefore never thought that mistreating the house-elf could lead him to betrayal. This came down to Sirius' family values. Though he had rebelled against his family's pure-blood mania and did his best to be good, Sirius unconsciously treated Kreacher with cruelty in Harry Potter. Unfortunately, this bias contributed to his death. Remus Lupin’s Story Demonstrated How Courage & Cowardice Come In Many Forms Remus Lupin was the kindest of the Marauders. His primary sin during his days at Hogwarts was that he hadn't been brave enough to stand up to his friends and put an end to their bad behavior. Really, bravery would continue to be a struggle for Lupin for the rest of his life. He had no problem standing up to villains. He joined the Order of the Phoenix without hesitation after leaving Hogwarts, and his bravery against Dark creatures made him the best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Harry had ever had. It was also Lupin who taught Harry how to face his fears and cast a Patronus—indeed, the work of a brave man. Still, when it came to facing the fears of his own day-to-day life, Lupin was a coward. This was precisely why Harry and his old mentor fought in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows . When Lupin learned that Tonks was pregnant, he was terrified that being associated with a werewolf would cause his wife and child strife. So, he attempted to leave them and asked Harry if he could join him on his adventures instead. Harry recognized this for what it was and accused Lupin of being a coward. Thankfully, Lupin listened and lived long enough to hold his son before sacrificing himself at the Battle of Hogwarts.Peter Pettigrew’s Story Proved That Every Evil Action Has A Consequence Peter Pettigrew made many poor decisions throughout his lifetime—but it was one of his few good choices that sealed his fate. From the time that James and his friends were at Hogwarts, Peter loved having power over others. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't particularly powerful on his own. This led Pettigrew to always seek the strongest individual to hide behind. He followed James and Sirius and relished in the power they held over victims like Severus Snape. Still, during the First Wizarding War, this was no longer enough, and Peter switched sides to join the bigger bully on the wizarding world playground. Despite this, Harry Potter still chose to spare Peter Pettigrew's life in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The boy regretted this decision almost immediately, but Albus Dumbledore predicted this would one day play out in Harry's favor. Of course, the old headmaster was correct. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pettigrew tried to kill Harry, who reminded his father's old friend that he owed Harry his life. To Pettigrew's own surprise, he released James' son—but the silvery metal hand that Voldemort had gifted Wormtail turned to kill him instead. Magic had ensured that the life debt—the consequence of Wormtail's actions—was paid.In all, though Peter Pettigrew was the most overtly evil of the Marauders, none were perfect. They had each made decisions that negatively impacted those around them, and they paid the price. Moody, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs were clever, strong, and full of life—but that didn't keep them from facing the consequences of their actions. Thankfully, none of it was for nothing. The next generation, including Harry Potter, learned from their examples, and each of their tragic deaths contributed to a better wizarding world.
