A trip to the mountains tests the capabilities of our Corolla Cross yearlong test car.
As we climbed to an altitude of 7,000 feet at Big Bear Lake, the Corolla Cross' 2.0-liter I-4 pulled us along without much issue most of the time, although overtaking slower traffic on an incline proved to be difficult for the 169-hp four-cylinder powerplant and its CVT. Fortunately, the Toyota's sharp, accurate steering allowed us to work the small crossover into a meditative rhythm as we navigated up the notoriously twisty lanes of Highways 330 and 18.
Over the two days we were in town, the Corolla Cross didn't have any issues mustering sufficient traction to get out of the muddy ruts that were left behind by our host's pickup. We suspect that the Toyota's weight distribution of 61 percent over the front wheels and just 39 percent over the rear provides a slight advantage over a rear-drive platform in low-traction environments, even without all-wheel drive.
