This isn’t how it used to be. It’s hard to remember now, but Conservatives did not always behave this way. The IMF warned that austerity was going too far too fast in 2013. Then chancellor George Osborne ignored them, but he did not question their motivation or brand them fools. He accepted it as a valid institution working to economic criteria.
That Gove interview became the default operating system for Government. At best, criticism and scrutiny were an elitist irrelevance. At worst, they were proof of conspiracy against the British people.with trade representatives if they did not enthuse about the “opportunities” for leaving the EU. Internal reports on the economic impact of Brexit were withheld from select committees so they could not assess them.
We are currently being saved by the fact that she was unable to go as far as she would have liked. During the Tory leadership campaign she briefed that she wanted to change the Bank of England’s mandate. Perhaps she still planned to do this, if her initial policy offering hadn’t detonated the UK economy. Either way, it is now precisely the Bank of England which is coming to her rescue, desperately trying to clean up the mess she has made.
