There is still so much to lose by ramping up the vitriol
Rishi Sunak is being accused of letting his principles stop him launching the type of aggressive personal attacks on Keir Starmer that some Tory ministers believe must now be at the centre of their election campaign
Their reputation is in tatters, their big policy announcements have failed to make a dent on Labour’s lead and their leader has spent much of the campaign making a series of enforced errors. What else do they have left, some Tories ask, but to open the vault and haul out the dossier marked “Starmer personal attacks?”, and has failed. For months, the Tories have been trying to attack Starmer’s personality and past record.
Some senior Tories also want more focus on Starmer’s record as a human rights lawyer, which saw him defend some unpalatable characters because, well, that is how being a barrister works. Arguing that the Labour leader isn’t fit to be Prime Minister because he defended some unpleasant people 30 years ago will sound absurd because it is absurd. And again, it’s already been tried.
