The human body can be surprisingly flexible, as anyone who has witnessed a contortionist can attest. However, what if exceptional flexibility held a deeper connection to other health conditions? New research suggests a link between hypermobility, a condition characterized by unusually flexible joints, and neurodivergence, particularly Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder ( ADHD ).

Studies indicate that nearly 80% of adult women with ADHD are hypermobile, and individuals with ADHD are four times more likely to be hypermobile compared to their neurotypical counterparts. This surprising correlation has sparked investigations into the underlying mechanisms that might connect seemingly unrelated conditions. Hypermobility, often the result of genetic differences in connective tissue, is not always problematic; in some cases, it can be advantageous, as seen in gymnasts and ballet dancers. However, in approximately 10% of hypermobile individuals, this can lead to Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), which weaken connective tissues. These conditions can cause a range of symptoms, including fatigue, headaches, poor proprioception, joint instability, pain, and increased susceptibility to injury. Furthermore, issues with connective tissue in veins can disrupt blood circulation, potentially leading to symptoms like dizziness and lightheadedness. These various symptoms highlight the complex nature of the connection between hypermobility and other health issues. \The impact of hypermobility extends beyond physical manifestations, potentially affecting mental health. The autonomic nervous system, which manages the body's fight-or-flight response, can be disrupted in individuals with hypermobility, which can contribute to the development of mental health problems like anxiety. Research from the late 1990s showed a strong correlation between hypermobility and anxiety disorders, with patients with anxiety being significantly more likely to have joint laxity. Brain imaging studies have revealed differences in brain structure and activity in hypermobile individuals, particularly in the amygdala (involved in fear and emotion processing) and the insula (involved in sensory and emotion perception, and interoception). These findings help to explain the higher levels of anxiety and difficulties with interoception experienced by many hypermobile patients. These structural differences mirror those found in people with anxiety disorders. Further studies have indicated that hypermobile adolescents are more likely to experience anxiety or panic attacks. Some researchers hypothesize that hypermobility and neurodivergence may be inherited together. The links between hypermobility, ADHD, anxiety, and fatigue appear to be substantial. While further research is needed to pinpoint the precise mechanisms behind these connections, the evidence strongly suggests that these conditions are interconnected.\Treatment for hypermobility and associated conditions is highly individualized due to the wide range of symptoms. Addressing comorbidities like ADHD and dysautonomia is crucial. Regular exercise, especially exercises such as Pilates, can be beneficial for strengthening core muscles. A stronger core can improve function and proprioception, and also decrease pain and reduce injury risk. However, it's important to exercise with caution, as hypermobility can increase the risk of injury if over-exerted. Maintaining good posture, both during work and study, can also help mitigate symptoms. Consider the ergonomics of your workspace: are you hunched over a laptop? Is your chair properly adjusted? Fibromyalgia, a chronic condition causing widespread pain, tenderness, fatigue, memory issues, and anxiety, is also linked with hypermobility. Therefore, understanding the interconnectedness of these conditions is essential for diagnosis, management, and treatment.
