They’re set up to imitate a traditional supermarket to provide dignity and choice to customers and reduce the stigma attached to receiving a so-called handout by charging a small fee, and don’t require the referrals foodbanks often ask for.
Feed The Hill never knows what it’s going to get from supermarkets, week in and week out. It might be branded goods that have fallen out of favour with cash-strapped shoppers or products suffering a labelling mishap. The shop opens every Wednesday at 10am but customers queue up outside an hour earlier while volunteers stock the shelves. A handwritten sign telling shoppers to bring a container for the oil next week is displayed.“Darling, Sainsbury’s is for rich people. We’re poor. I can’t go to Sainsbury’s. This is my store,” says a 64-year-old woman as she waits outside.
Some pay in kind, like the customer who gave the shop a fresh lick of yellow paint. An unemployed electrician maintains the fridges. One man says if he doesn’t have the money one week, next time he will try to give a fiver. “I think it’s just the way things are with society and the economy, it’s just a normal part of life that sometimes you might be a little bit down on your luck.
