Kyiv aims to sever the heavily fortified Russian line guarding the link between Crimea and Russia
The land bridge refers to a band of Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia that stretches from the Donbas region along the Sea of Azov coast to Crimea.Holding this territory allows Russia to transport and supply its forces using a network of captured railways and roads.This land bridge gives Russia a way to move men and supplies to occupied Crimea, which is otherwise connected to Russia solely by the Kerch Bridge. Ukrainian attacks have twice damaged the bridge.
Fields studded with anti-tank and anti-personnel mines have slowed down Ukraine’s counteroffensive.The destruction of the Kakhovka dam that flooded the Dnipro River in early June allowed Russia to move troops to strengthen defenses in other areas.To hit strategic objectives, Ukraine currently counts on advanced Himars rocket launchers supplied by the U.S., but their range is limited to 50 miles.
