A Hollywood star at the top of a cast list is no guarantee that a production will be particularly good, but when it works, it really works.
is a rarity: a genuinely underrated Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and an incredible vehicle for whoever gets to take a turn as Norma Desmond – in this case, Nicole Scherzinger, whose years in the spotlight have prepared her well for a production that revolves around the headiness of fame.
The best thing about stars coming to the West End is that they can often facilitate audiences getting to know other amazing talent they may never have seen otherwise. This is particularly excellent if the latter have been making waves in theatre for years. Penelope Skinner, who wrote, has had plays on at every great new writing theatre in the UK – plus, this production is overseen by one of our best living directors, Ian Rickson.
