On 7 December, the Constitutional Court of South Africa ordered that Chris Hani’s assassin, Janusz Walus, be freed from jail – a month after the apex court okayed his parole. His looming freedom has stirred generational tension across South Africa, limiting Walus’ freedom despite his release,“First, the disgraced ANC ruling party sees the inter-generational fury over Hani’s murder as a tool to let Black South Africans forget the soaring poverty of the present,” says Kakande, the author.
