The moment of two Black men holding the most important positions in football on the national stage on Super Bowl Sunday will be historically significant for a struggle more than 75 years old. The quarterback position has been the one position that has taken the longest to be desegregated, and the racial stereotyping of Black quarterbacks has been common for a long time. In 2015,found that Black quarterbacks are twice as likely to be benched or removed from play than white quarterbacks—which some would refer to as a “shorter leash.
Both Mahomes and Hurts have had stellar seasons, each leading their offenses to the No. 1 and No. 2 ranks in the league, respectively, and their teams overall to the No. 1 seed in their respective conferences. The two quarterbacks are both finalists for this year’s regular-season MVP award, with Mahomes currently leading as the favorite to win.
