The Sickly Hecks, a garage rock band from Fort Collins, have rebranded themselves as moonpool, exploring a wider range of genres and embracing a more expansive sound. The band's new single, 'Crystalline,' marks the beginning of this exciting new chapter, showcasing their unique blend of grunge, shoegaze, and punk influences.
The Sickly Hecks, a Fort Collins-based garage rock band, have undergone a significant transformation, rebranding themselves as moonpool and venturing into new musical territories. The band, consisting of Suny (vocals/guitar), Hartman (drums), and Miller (guitar), felt that their previous name no longer accurately reflected their evolving sound and artistic direction.
Suny explains that the name change was a natural progression, driven by a desire to explore new genres and push creative boundaries.'After a while, the name stopped feeling like us,' Suny states. 'I still look fondly on most of the music we made in that time period, but it no longer reflects where we are artistically or as human beings anymore.' The addition of guitarist Izaiah Miller to the lineup further solidified this shift. Miller's unique guitar style and influence from bands like the Dead Kennedys, Sonic Youth, and DIIV contributed to moonpool's distinctive blend of grunge, shoegaze, and punk. The band's debut single, 'Crystalline,' released on February 21st, 2024, showcases this sonic evolution. The track, which will be followed by a full EP on March 7th, explores themes of grief, loss, and transformation through melancholic yet shimmering soundscapes. Suny describes 'Crystalline' as a song where the words came naturally, reflecting on how these experiences can be both painful and ultimately lead to growth. While moonpool delves into deeper existential questions through their music, the band emphasizes their core value of creating a sense of community and upliftment. Miller reflects, 'At the end of the day, all we can do is lift each other up through music and shared community.
