While crime dramas like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos have come to define the Golden Age of Television, The Shield has often been overlooked. At first glance, The Shield appears to be a typical gritty cop show, but it is just as complex and shocking as more well-known dramas, and even the best police procedurals of all time.
The Shield's seven seasons built up to one of the most haunting endings in a TV drama series, and The Shield regularly starred big-name actors like Forest Whitaker and Glenn Close. While a lesser-known name at the time, Walton Goggins' role made him a TV legend and influenced several of his later shows, including his Sons of Anarchy character. What Is The Shield About? The Shield centers on a police department based in a repossessed church in the fictional Farmington District of Los Angeles. The show features characters from several levels of law enforcement, including politicians, detectives, and rookie cops, but within the department is a smaller unit known as the Strike Team. This tight-knit group is both formidable and corrupt. While many characters wrestle with various issues, the Strike Team appears confident, even arrogant, with a friendship that seems unbreakable despite the best efforts of other characters. However, the group's dynamic quickly begins to unravel from the first episode's shocking ending, which changes the game for the Strike Team and its leader, Detective Vic Mackey . Mackey is one of the greatest crime drama TV characters of all time, and his long-standing friendship with Shane Vendrell is a masterclass in character development. Vic and his team use corrupt methods to work alongside criminals on the street, usually convinced that the ends justify the means. This reversed the typical police show format, casting the cops as the villains. The Shield's first few seasons are closer to a police procedural format with several"cases of the week." Still, the series rapidly turns into a gritty and tense drama in a similar vein to Breaking Bad and The Sopranos, with the walls closing in on the Strike Team and showcasing other iconic characters, like CCH Pounder's fascinating Claudette Wyms. The Shield Was Ahead Of Its Time The Shield's first season aired in 2002, and the show immediately began representing characters and situations that were rarely discussed or understood at the time. Over its six-year run, this approach continued with some extremely dark plotlines, which still humanized the characters involved, giving viewers some of the most interesting and harrowing storylines in a crime drama. Detective Wyms has lupus, which occasionally affects her work. The subplot during which she has a flare-up and suffers from her colleague's career-jeopardizing meddling would not be out of place in a modern TV show. Julien struggles to deal with his religious upbringing and his sexuality, leading to a storyline that was ahead of its time, even though it may have been approached differently now. While The Shield suffers from a problem that still plagues cop shows today by often featuring characters who are lying about sexual assault, it explored a related topic that few dramas would have touched. David Aceveda's sexual assault and complicated feelings around it are approached with more sensitivity than many writers would have considered in the early 2000s. The Shield changed the crime genre forever by making cops the bad guys and highlighting issues like systemic racism and police brutality. While the show was not based on a true story, parts of it were inspired by a real-life scandal in the LAPD. This was a new take on the police procedural format, and The Shield still holds up today. Why The Shield Is Worth Binging Many of the best cop shows and crime dramas owe some of their success to The Shield, especially Sons of Anarchy. Both shows were written by Kurt Sutter, and many actors had key roles in both, including Walton Goggins. The Shield is well worth watching for this reason, as it has a similar tone and cast while being very different in theme and outcome. The Shield features excellent acting performances and is one of Goggins' best TV shows. While Michael Chiklis tends to steal the scenes he is in, there have been some standout guest performances. Melanie Lynskey's generally sweet demeanor as Marcy Lindhoff covers her character's disturbing nature in a way similar to her later roles in Yellowjackets and The Last of Us. Many older shows become predictable when watched by a modern audience, who may have seen later shows that use the same twists. However, The Shield remains unpredictable throughout. While it becomes clear that the events are unlikely to end up peacefully resolved, the eventual fates of the main characters are shocking and brutal, just in drastically different ways. The Shield combines the staple characters and themes of a police procedural TV show with the tension and cliffhangers found in a great drama. It rarely drags, building momentum throughout the show's run, and each of the seasons has between 10 and 13 episodes.
