Careers do not thrive in a vacuum. People matter, so in the words of Sir Paul, “let ’em in”.
Vacuums do a passable job when it comes to keeping the coffee warm, and the beer cold, but do not try living in one for long. Careers are personal, at their best our work is a projection of our preoccupations, or it is a solution to our neuroses, an expression of a talent identified. It is who we are.
A world where everyone was out for themselves would be horrific. It would be worse than the moment the free pies come out in the Qantas lounge, or being stuck in a traffic jam for 90 minutes trying to get into a Paul McCartney concert while others try to jump the queue. To be fair, the crowd were probably not there to hear read out a list of every person who has played a role in McCartney’s success. This wasn’t an Oscars speech after all.
