It’s an old-school approach, but it’s worked a treat at Yates Avenue.
When Stacey Talbot started teaching at Yates Avenue Public five years ago, most of her lesson time was dedicated to managing poor behaviour in the classroom.
Students in a composite year 5 and 6 class with their teacher Stacey Talbot at Yates Avenue Public School in Dundas Valley.“In a year 5 maths, we might review decimals or fractions before class starts just to make sure any concepts we’ve already taught is cemented before we move on,” says Talbot. During the reviews students write answers on mini-whiteboards or sing out responses to a string of rapid-fire questions. “After that, we go to the main lesson and then any group or independent work.
Yates principal David MacSporran says the changes have led to a dramatic improvement in the school’s NAPLAN and phonics check results. Just over 47 per cent were in the top two bands for reading last year, compared with 26 per cent in 2019. In numeracy, 44.6 per cent scored in the top two bands, compared with 29 per cent three years before.Their 2023 NAPLAN results are also promising: all students are above the proficiency benchmark in writing.
, all students met the expected achievement level of 28 correct answers from 40 questions. The result is up from 71 per cent in 2020.
