Cailee Spaeny walking toward light at the end of a spacecraft hallway in Alien: Romulus

After the cancellation of Neill Blomkamp's planned film, and the box office underperformance of Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, it seemed like the iconic sci-fi franchise was in bad shape. But last year, director Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus performed a much-needed Heimlich on the series, bringing it back from the brink of extinction.

The movie earned positive reviews, and did very well at the box office. A sequel was quickly green-lit, while a crossover with the similarly resuscitated Predator franchise has also been rumored. Alien: Romulus was supported by the FX series Alien: Earth, which earned considerable acclaim as well. The movie is now heading to a new streaming platform, where it'll presumably attract a new wave of popularity. Released in 2024, Alien: Romulus was set between the events of Scott's Alien and James Cameron's equally beloved Aliens. The movie grossed $350 million at the global box office, against a reported production budget of $80 million. In 2017, Scott's Alien: Covenant generated around $270 million globally against a reported budget of more than $100 million. Scott also directed the franchise's most successful movie, Prometheus, which made over $400 million worldwide in 2012. Like Prometheus and Covenant, Romulus earned positive reviews as well. It's now sitting at an 80% critics' score and an 85% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads,"Honoring its nightmarish predecessors while chestbursting at the seams with new frights of its own, Romulus injects some fresh acid blood into one of cinema's great horror franchises." 'Alien: Romulus' Features a Cast of Promising Young Actors The movie features Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced among a cast of promising up-and-comers. Some months ago, director Dan Trachtenberg released Predator: Badlands, which earned similarly positive reviews, and grossed nearly $200 million globally. There's a chance that the two franchises could cross over, as they did in the mid-1990s. A direct sequel to Romulus is also in the works, although Álvarez has said that he won't return to direct. He followed a similar strategy with Don't Breathe 2, which he sat out after directing the breakout horror hit Don't Breathe.
