The Saga, a 'video painting' on San Fernando's façade, is a 24-minute massive light show projected onto the church at 9 and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
San Antonio artist and designer Gini Garcia was in Lourdes , France , when I caught up with her by phone to talk about a San Antonio cultural institution that she helped create and that remains an artistic asset to the city. It’s an economic generator, beautiful to look at, charges no admission, is open six nights a week and tells a remarkably detailed story of the city’s history — all on the façade of San Fernando Cathedral , the oldest continuously operating parish in the United States .

Every time I take a group to see it, viewers stand close to those who hold impromptu talks about its origins. It’s a story that began more than 12 years ago.
Nirenberg winds down his mayoral term at full speed Molly Hall-Villarreal, executive director of the nonprofit conservancy, sees The Saga as among the city’s must-see cultural spaces. “People go to the Alamo, the Riverwalk, and they go to The Saga,” she said. “We’ve become a San Antonio institution.” The show gets about 50,000 to 60,000 viewers a year. It went dark for about a year during the coronavirus pandemic.

The city of San Antonio has been just an incredible champion,” Hall-Villarreal said. “But if it wasn’t for people like the Scanlon Foundation, it wouldn’t be able to continue.” The Saga’s popularity is a testament to the artistic genius of its projection as well as to the images it uses to tell San Antonio’s story.
